The fact of the matter is, I have not missed painting....at all, during the 18 months I have been on sabbatical. (Trying to figure out if this is a good thing?? ...) So when the company , who retains me to handle the company's marketing (Mid-Coast Energy Systems) approached me with the idea of painting a 17 ft x 10 ft. mural of a waving American Flag on their new showroom wall....I was less than enthusiastic and in fact, felt a wave of major dread. But I have a personal and professional interest in this company and it's people... I wanted to accomodate and add my signature to this wonderful project- an interactive showroom promoting energy efficient systems. (Grand Opening June 11th 2012) Read more »

Trademarks, Trade Secrets & Copyright Law
Artists, and Creative Types of all ages are invited to attend a presentation on Intellectual Property at Spectrum Generations
Community Center in Damariscotta Maine. Read below the details as presented in a recent press release:
Attorney Andy Zulieve presents: “Intellectual Property” for Entrepreneurs
After retiring from a full career, many people decide to write a book, write music, create art works, launch an Internet venture or start a new business that involves that may include potentially valuable “Intellectual Property” business assets. Intellectual Property or "intangible interests" are of potentially significant value to all businesses, and generally refer to trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets and patents. Any business plan should account for the acquisition, development and protection of these assets, whichever are applicable. Intellectual Property Expert and Mid-coast Maine Business Attorney, Andy Zulieve is guest speaker for a special program “Lunch & the Law.” on Wednesday February 22nd beginning at 11:00 held at Spectrum Generations in Damariscotta.
Attorney Zulieve will identify and explain the different types of intellectual property, and emphasize the value of developing, protecting and profiting from them as integral assets in a company portfolio. For a number of important reasons, any business should discuss prospective intellectual property issues with an attorney specializing in intellectual property law. Make well-reasoned business decisions now and avoid future damage control and the crippling costs having to defend an infringement claim in federal court.
Entrepreneurs and creative types of any age are encouraged to attend. Bring your ideas and questions for discussion to this informative and valuable event.
Lunch begins at 11:15 and the talk immediately after. Reservations are required by calling Marianne Pinkham at 207 563-1363 or emailing mpinkham@spectrumgenerations.org.
If you cannot attend but would more information about Intellectual Property, to get a free copy of Zulieve's Basics of Intellectual Property Law, please call his office directly at 207 -790-2185.
There's frost on the pumpkin and woodsmoke in the air. My bare feet can no longer tolerate hitting the old drafty floors of this ancient house first thing in the morning.
The pugs have retired to their winter residence in front of the fireplace, instead of setting up camp for the day in Andy's office.
The "quiet side" is how everyone refers to South West Harbor. We have been fortunate to visit the area for the past three years each October. This was the first year I did not think about painting even once. I thought about sculpture and if I could have found an exhibit would have taken that in...we crammed 5 days of hiking into 3 days, so little time to look for art. Jordan Pond House however, is a must stop. Popovers, Lobster Stew and tea in front of the fireplace while gazing at mountains and overlooking Jordan Pond are an experience we are simply not willing to do without.
After the lengthy ordeal of finding just the right new family for the sheep-- Duncan, Chloe, Chester & Nellie Belle all left for their new home/farm located in Brownville, Maine last Wednesday evening. I know they'll get plenty of attention and love from their new family of many children! (10) Although it was time to hang up my sheepherders crook, and as eager as I was to get the transfer complete, I cried like a baby as soon as they loaded Chester (the back sheep- my all time favorite) onto the truck. I always impose human emotions onto my animals and I was sure at that very moment, as he looked me in the eye, that he knew he was being "sent away" and was afraid. However silly it is, being overly emotional is part of the fabric of my nature and at 53, I am certainly not going to change it. I come by it honestly from a long, long line of sappy animal lovers - we even had a pet flying squirrel named Rocky who flew around (inside) the house at night, when I was 5 years old. I often say "it's not easy being me" Being overly -sensitive is hard.... but as long as I still "feel" I'm not complaining!!
Haining's historically based style is infused with a blend of abstract impressionism.
Haining's “Lost Oar” Series, whimsical paintings of mermaids, satirical themes and commissions of historic sailing vessels are particularly well known. Her work is in collections nationwide.
Her accomplishments include book cover art for Penguin Press, affiliation with the American Folk Art Museum in New York City and being invited as a featured artist for several maritime institutions of note, including the Maine Maritime Museum and the Nantucket Whaling Museum.
Haining is currently on sabbatical and concentrating on her marketing career, which she has always enjoyed along with her art career.
"When the spirit moves me, I'll go back to art...I was feeling stagnant and bored with my artwork and finally gave myself permission to stop in order to clear my head. It was feeling way too "serious!" It became obvious I needed to walk away. I need to approach it from a completely new direction....perhaps even a new medium...when-what that might be...I'm not sure...we'll see."
Everything changes. Holly
